New York adds $35 million for public sector EV chargers, betting on unglamorous municipal sites.

Retail charging stations tend to get the headlines. Municipal parking lots do not. New York's decision to add $35 million to its Charge Ready NY programme, aimed squarely at public sector entities installing Level 2 chargers, is a bet on the less photogenic half of the market.
Proposers may claim up to 80 percent of documented purchase and installation costs, provided they use equipment manufacturers and network providers already vetted through NYSERDA's qualification process. Applications are due October 20th, and the agency will hold an informational webinar on September 15th to walk applicants through requirements.
The money builds on a sizeable existing footprint. New York already counts more than 21,000 Level 2 and fast chargers statewide, supporting some 331,000 electric vehicles as of July. A separate track, Charge Ready NY 2.0, continues funding installations at multifamily buildings and hotels, meaning two parallel programmes now target distinct property types at once.
The logic is straightforward, if unglamorous. Public buildings and parking facilities have historically drawn less private investment, since per session revenue runs lower than at retail sites. By subsidising that gap, the state hopes to demonstrate reliability to residents while filling in coverage that commercial operators would rather skip.
