EVgo Bets Big on One Plug to Rule Them All

EVgo is chasing a big number. The fast charging operator wants more than 500 installed North American Charging Standard connectors live by the end of 2026, a target that turns a promising pilot into a full network strategy.

That pilot ran through 2025, placing nearly 100 NACS connectors across 22 metro areas. Now EVgo is widening the aperture. New and retrofitted stalls are heading to nine priority markets: Austin, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit and San Francisco.

The push tracks a real shift in demand. More automakers are shipping vehicles with native NACS inlets, and drivers increasingly expect to just plug in without a workaround. EVgo says its liquid cooled NACS cables were built and stress tested at its Innovation Lab before hitting the field.

Compatibility runs both ways. Expanded Autocharge+ support means both NACS and CCS drivers can charge without extra authentication steps. That single detail removes friction that has quietly annoyed drivers for years.

EVgo projects more than 80 percent of new electric vehicles sold in North America will carry NACS compatibility by 2030. For site hosts and network planners, that is not a distant forecast. It is a near term operational priority, which explains why operators are retrofitting existing stalls instead of waiting out a full hardware replacement cycle.

Alex Keros, senior vice president of product at EVgo, framed the expanded compatibility as part of a broader industry move: serve drivers regardless of which connector standard their car originally shipped with. Other networks will likely be forced to match that pragmatic stance.
